MELB ENVIRO REPORT-Collingwood Football Club and the environment

In 2007 Collingwood became the first AFL club, and we believe the first sporting club in Australia to commit to the journey to become truly carbon neutral.

Collingwood has worked together with Origin to reduce the club’s carbon footprint and develop the Lexus Centre as a leading facility in environmental innovation.

The club identified a number of initiatives and committed to beginning the journey towards carbon neutrality through improving energy efficiency across all club activities and by purchasing offset credits where emissions were unavoidable.

The initiatives were:

  • Undertake an independent Greenhouse Gas emissions audit. Collingwood and the Lexus Centre underwent an independent Greenhouse Gas emissions audit conducted by Carbon Planet. The audit found that each year Collingwood emits 1,997.8 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.
  • Reduce the impact of Greenhouse Gas emissions from the audited club’s operations to zero. The club now offsets all greenhouse gas emissions (produced through team activities that involve gas and electricity use, as well as road and interstate air travel) and ensures the club has significantly reduced our impact on the environment. With Origin’s Carbon Reduction Scheme™, 1,997.8 tonnes of Carbon Offset have been purchased.
  • Purchase Government accredited GreenPower from Origin
  • Promoting the uptake of green energy in the community and encouraging our members and supporters to do the same and become more energy efficient. This year thousands of Collingwood members have chosen to switch to green energy with Origin’s Green for Footy product and the Origin AFL Green program.
  • Collingwood President Eddie McGuire, Senior Coach Michael Malthouse, Club legend Nathan Buckley, CEO Gary Pert drive Lexus Hybrid vehicles.
  • Identify ambassadors to promote climate change awareness and the easy ways we can all make a difference. We are delighted that Collingwood defender Shane Wakelin has become an Al Gore Ambassador and will be raising awareness of environmental issues in a series of presentations in 2008.
